QUANTILE-BOXPLOTS

ABSTRACT

Two statistical graphics are introduced. The theoretical quantile-boxplot (TQBP) can be regarded as a theoretical counterpart of J. W. Tukey's boxplot. Just as the latter is well suited for comparing different data sets the TQBP is believed to be an efficient tool for comparing theoretical distributions. Its construction however depends on the ability to compute certain quantiles which often is not possible. Using simulations one can construct point estimates and confidence intervals for them and these are displayed in the empirical quantile-boxplot (EQBP). Three examples will demonstrate the potential of both graphics for educational purposes and statistical tests.
