Towards a better use of psychoanalytic concepts: a model illustrated using the concept of enactment

Abstract

It is well known that there is a lack of consensus about how to decide between competing and sometimes mutually contradictory theories, and how to integrate divergent concepts and theories. In view of this situation the Project Committee on Conceptual Integration developed a method that allows comparison between different versions of concepts, their underlying theories and basic assumptions. Only when placed in a frame of reference can similarities and differences be seen in a methodically comprehensible and reproducible way. We used “enactment” to study the problems of comparing concepts systematically. Almost all psychoanalytic schools have developed a conceptualization of it. We made a sort of provisional canon of relevant papers we have chosen from the different schools. The five steps of our method for analyzing the concept of enactment will be presented. The first step is the history of the concept; the second the phenomenology; the third a methodological analysis of the construction of the concept. In order to compare different conceptualizations we must know the main dimensions of the meaning space of the concept, this is the fourth step. Finally, in step five we discuss if and to what extent an integration of the different versions of enactment is possible.

Bekanntermaßen besteht kein Konsens in der Frage, wie zwischen rivalisierenden und manchmal widersprüchlichen Theorien entschieden und wie divergente Konzepte und Theorien integriert werden können. Angesichts dieser Situation hat das ‐Projektkomitee für konzeptuelle Integration eine Methode entwickelt, die einen Vergleich unterschiedlicher Konzeptfassungen, ihrer zugrundeliegenden Theorien und Grundannahmen ermöglicht. Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede können nur innerhalb eines Bezugsrahmens auf methodisch verständliche und reproduzierbare Weise erfasst werden. Wir haben das Konzept des Enactment benutzt, um die Probleme des Konzeptvergleichs systematisch zu untersuchen. Entsprechende Konzeptualisierungen finden sich in fast allen psychoanalytischen Schulen. Wir haben eine Art probatorischen Kanons relevanter Beiträge unterschiedlicher Provenienz erstellt. Die fünf Schritte unserer Methode zur Analyse des Konzepts „Enactment” werden hier vorgestellt. Der erste Schritt ist die Geschichte des Konzepts – seine Genealogie; der zweite die Phänomenologie; der dritte eine methodologische Analyse der Definition des Konzepts. Um verschiedenartige Konzeptualisierungen miteinander zu vergleichen, müssen wir die wesentlichen Dimensionen des Bedeutungsraumes des Konzepts kennen – der vierte Schritt. In einem fünften Schritt diskutieren wir, ob und inwieweit eine Integration der verschiedenartigen Versionen von „Enactment” möglich ist.

Es bien sabido que no existe consenso respecto de cómo elegir entre teorías rivales que, a veces, se contradicen mutuamente, ni de cómo integrar conceptos y teorías divergentes. Ante esta situación, el Project Committee on Conceptual Integration (Comité de Proyectos sobre Integración Conceptual) de la desarrolló un método que permite la comparación entre distintas versiones de conceptos, las teorías subyacentes y sus supuestos básicos. Solo al colocar dichos conceptos en un marco de referencia pueden identificarse las similitudes y diferencias de manera metódica, comprensible y replicable. Utilizamos la noción de enactment (puesta en acto) para estudiar los problemas que surgen al comparar conceptos sistemáticamente. Casi todas las escuelas psicoanalíticas han elaborado una conceptualización de este término. Realizamos una suerte de canon probatorio de trabajos relevantes que seleccionamos de las distintas escuelas. Se presentan los cinco pasos de nuestro método para analizar la noción de enactment. El primer paso es la historia del concepto: su genealogía. El segundo es la fenomenología. El tercero, un análisis metodológico de la definición del concepto. Para poder comparar las distintas conceptualizaciones, debemos saber cuáles son las dimensiones principales del espacio significativo del concepto, y este es el cuarto paso. Finalmente, en el quinto paso analizamos si es posible integrar, y en qué medida, las distintas versiones de esta noción.

On sait bien qu'il n'existe pas de consensus quant à la façon d'opérer une sélection entre des théories rivales et parfois mutuellement contradictoires et d'intégrer des concepts et des théories divergents. Face à cette situation, le comité d'intégration conceptuelle de l’ a développé une méthode permettant d’établir une comparaison entre les différentes versions des concepts et les théories et hypothèses de base qui les sous‐tendent. Pour pouvoir étudier les similitudes et les différences de façon méthodique, compréhensible et reproductible, il faut pouvoir disposer d'un cadre de références. Nous avons utilisé la notion de « mise en acte » pour examiner les problèmes soulevés par la comparaison systématique des concepts. Presque toutes les écoles psychanalytiques ont conceptualisé cette notion. Nous avons constitué un corpus à partir de textes de différentes écoles de pensée, choisis pour leur pertinence. Nous présenterons les cinq étapes de notre méthode d'analyse du concept de mise en acte. Premièrement, l'histoire du concept – sa généalogie. Deuxièmement, sa phénoménologie. Troisièmement, l'analyse méthodologique de la définition du concept. Quatrièmement, les principales caractéristiques du champ sémantique du concept – étape nécessaire pour pouvoir comparer les différentes conceptualisations entre elles. Et cinquièmement, l’étude de la potentialité ou non de l'intégration des différentes versions de la mise en acte.

Per un uso più accurato dei concetti psicoanalitici: una metodologia illustrate con il concetto di enactment

È ben risaputo che i disaccordi abbondano quando si tratta di prendere posizione rispetto a teorie contrastanti e spesso mutulamente contradditorie; integrare concetti e teorie divergenti è spesso problematico. Per far fronte a questa situazione il comitato di progettazione concettuale dell’ ha concepito un metodo che consente di confrontare le diverse nozioni di uno stesso concetto, la teoria che le sottende e gli assunti di base. È infatti soltanto sullo sfondo di un preciso contesto referenziale che le differenze e le similitudini possono essere individuate in modo chiaro e sistematico. Gli autori si sono serviti come campione del concetto di “enactment”, che fa parte del pensiero di quasi ogni scuola. Dopo aver definito un canone della letteratura sull’ enactement proveniente da varie scuole, sono poi proceduti a definire un metodo consistente in cinque stadi per l'analisi di questo concetto. Il primo stadio riguarda la sua storia e genealogia; il secondo la fenomenologia; il terzo l'analisi metodologica nella definizione del concetto. Il quarto stadio consiste nello stabilire le dimensioni principali del significato di questo concetto, indispensabili al confronto delle diverse concettualizzazioni. Infine, al quinto stadio viene disaminato se, e in quale misura, sia possibile integrare le varie concettualizzazioni.

3. Phenomenology is used here restrictively as a tool for a ‘bottom up’ clinical observation, something which is widely missing in clinical psychoanalytic culture.
