Abstract
The presence and proliferation of warts relates to the host immune response to the human papillomavirus. The number and recalcitrance of warts in some individuals infected with HIV and in some organ transplant recipients are evidence of this fact. Therapy aimed at inciting or boosting immune recognition of, and response to, human papillomavirus is termed immunotherapy, and has the theoretical advantage over destructive modalities of stimulating the body’s innate mechanisms in the control of clinical disease.
