Abstract
Cosmetics are a large part of our consumer market and are frequently used in the daily routine of many individuals in our society. Cosmetics are common causes of many adverse reactions, including irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. Many allergens found in cosmetic products can cause allergic contact dermatitis, including fragrances, preservatives, hair care products, nail allergens, cosmeceuticals and botanicals. What follows is a review of allergic contact dermatitis, the patch testing technique that is the gold standard test for diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis and common allergens seen in the cosmetic arena. New products and allergens are continually introduced into our environment. Dermatologists will have to remain vigilant in their efforts to perform patch testing, in order to identify new and emerging allergens causing allergic contact dermatitis.
