Hydroquinone: its value and safety. Commentary on the US FDA proposal to remove hydroquinone from the over-the-counter market

Pages 283-287 | Published online: 10 Jan 2014

Abstract

Skin color defines the image we have of ourselves. Having a pleasing, attractive color is important to everyone. Most individuals seek treatment for pigmentary abnormalities. For those with dark spots, hydroquinone is available with or without prescription. The US FDA proposes to remove nonprescription hydroquinone. The FDA notes that ochronosis, depigmentation and cancer are the issues of concern. However, ochronosis is rare. There are no cases of depigmentation from hydroquinone and skin cancer has never been reported following its use. Studies on populations of individuals exposed to the chemical in industry fail to demonstrate any adverse effects. The history of hydroquinone is one of safety. It is not necessary to remove the medication from the market and meaningful studies can be carried out while people continue to have access to hydroquinone.
