Diabetes and the skin: an update for dermatologists

Pages 305-316 | Published online: 10 Jan 2014

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus and the skin could be, and indeed has been, the subject of an entire book. This brief review is a highly selective summary of relatively recent issues that are relevant for dermatologists and is not intended to be comprehensive. It includes comments regarding necrobiosis lipoidica, perforating collagenosis and other commonly diabetes-associated disorders, fat deposition, calcification, autoimmune associations, the diabetic foot and skin glycation. The focus is on newer areas of therapy, controversies and some areas that may be less familiar to dermatologists.
