Cataract surgery

Abstract

Cataract surgery is not only one of the oldest types of surgery but is also the most common in the developed world. A large proportion of the world’s blind people are blind due to this treatable condition. There are exciting developments in cataract removal in both the developed and developing worlds, and the latest low-technology surgical techniques can give good outcomes in rural settings. The technology and techniques for surgery are discussed in an outline fashion allowing the nonophthalmologist to understand the latest developments. This review also looks at the increased interest in improving the quality of vision following cataract surgery, with several innovative lens implant technologies being outlined.
