Figure 1 Flowchart of participant enrollment. A total of 420 patients were hospitalized with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. After excluding patients who were hospitalized for other causes of dyspnea and those with no multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results available, 262 final exacerbation cases from 192 patients were enrolled in the study.
