Figure 1 Route of Brucella infection. Infection first occurs through the mucous membranes; once inside the body it is engulfed by phagocytes, such as macrophages, neutrophils and dendritic cells. The bacteria replicate within these cells before moving to regional lymph nodes and then spreading to different organs such as the eye, lung, spleen, liver and bone marrow.
