Abstract

D'Archino R., Nelson W.A. and Zuccarello G.C. 2010. Psaromenia (Kallymeniaceae, Rhodophyta): a new genus for Kallymenia berggrenii. Phycologia 49: 73–85. DOI: 10.2216/08-29.1

Molecular sequence analyses have shown that Kallymenia berggrenii, a species endemic to New Zealand, is more closely related to other taxa in the family Kallymeniaceae than to the type species and other members of the genus Kallymenia. A new genus, Psaromenia, is described based on morphological, anatomical and life history observations. Previously regarded as a species with a northern New Zealand distribution, the occurrence of this species in Fiordland, southwestern South Island, is established. Analyses of rbcL data show that Psaromenia berggrenii belongs to a strongly supported clade to which Meredithia microphylla also belongs. A heteromorphic life history in Psaromenia is postulated based on the absence of mature thalli bearing tetrasporangia and the development of crusts from germinating carpospores.
