On the misuse of lectotypification in diatom taxonomy

Pages 108-113 | Received 22 Feb 2016, Accepted 04 Aug 2016, Published online: 21 Mar 2019

Abstract:

If a single element (a specimen or, when permitted, an illustration) is used in the protologue of a new species, it becomes automatically its holotype, and the lectotypification of such names is unwarranted. In cases when both specimens and illustrations are cited, the International Code of Nomenclature establishes the order of preference between these elements to designate a suitable lectotype. Correct and incorrect lectotypifications are briefly discussed, with examples taken mainly from the diatom literature.
