Abstract
Stock control is almost a mandatory chapter of OR text books, yet remains a tool that practitioners seemingly leave permanently in their toolbox. This article examines the case for greater involvement from the OR community and suggests themes and stalling points for development.

Ian Fleming
IAN FLEMING is a consultant with the Distribution and Logistics Division of Touche Ross Management Consultants. Since joining Touche he has been involved in a number of inventory-related projects in the retail, wholesale, brewing and manufacturing industry sectors. Ian holds an MSc in Operational Research and has previously worked for Unilever as an OR Analyst and at W H Smith Ltd as a Business Analyst.
