Speciation or Subspeciation in the Yellow Robins?

Pages 103-106 | Received 07 Apr 1978, Published online: 22 Dec 2016

SUMMARY

Ford, J. 1979. Speciation or subspeciation in the yellow robins? Emu 79: 103–106.

Whether the yellow robins Eopsaltria australis and E.griseogularis are species or subspecies is uncertain if their relationship is judged solely on their degree of morphological differentiation. Strong similarities in their calls, ecology and behaviour suggest that they are probably conspecific. The taxonomic need to treat australis and griseogularis as species is obviated by not giving subspecific names to their clinal variants.
