Summary

Geographical variation in the Glossy Black-Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus lathami is analysed. Two outlying regional populations, one in central east coastal Queensland and the other on Kangaroo Island, are shown to be morphologically separable from a core population through south-eastern Australia. The first is small in size and the second, also rather small, has a disproportionally large bill as well. Both are recognised subspecifically, the central east Queensland form being described as new. Late Cainozoic palaeogeography and climatic change are invoked to explain their likely origin, isolation and divergence. Implications for conservation are discussed.
