Summary
Chemotherapeutic agents are commonly given to poultry for the prevention and treatment of infectious and parasitic diseases. When used correctly these substances are generally free of overt toxic effects. Sometimes other adverse effects need to be considered such as, depressed growth rate, poor feed conversion, reduced egg production, lowered fertility and unacceptable tissue residues. Toxicity usually occurs due to accidental or deliberate overdosage, species susceptibility, or dosing with undesirable combinations of chemotherapeutic agents. The age, bodily condition, and growth rate or rate of egg production also influence the birds' susceptibility. This article reviews basic pharmacological data, adverse affects and other toxic reactions of the more commonly used antibacterial agents (nitrofurans, streptomycin and sulphonamides); antiprotozoal agents (amprolium, dimetridazole, dinitolmide, halofuginonc, ionophores, nicarbazin and nitrothiazoles), anthelmintics (benzimidazoles, imidathiazoles and piperazine), insecticides (carbamates, chlorinated hydrocarbons and organophosphates) and the benzenearsonic acid compounds. The text also contains working definitions of terms commonly encountered in pharmacological and toxicological reports.
