SUMMARY
The karyotype of macrochromosomes in domestic fowl is rather well known. Even the microchromosomes are generally agreed upon with respect to number. Karyotypes of several other avian species have been studied. Polyploidy in fowl has been described and translocations have been observed to arise spontaneously and to have been produced experimentally. With the exception of the sex chromosome, little is known about the location of mutant genes on specific chromosomes. Avian cytogenetics is a fertile field for future experimentation and is being investigated in several locations in the United States. This research may have practical applications to poultry breeding if information is developed relating economic traits to specific chromosomes.

Le caryotype des macrochromosomes de la poule domestique est assez bien connu. Pour les microchromosomes, l'accord se fait en général pour leur nombre. Les caryotypes de plusieurs autres espéces aviaires ont été étudiés. La polyploidie a été décrite chez la poule; des translocations ont été observées, apparues spontanément, ou ont été produites expérimentalement. A l'exception du chromosome lié au sexe, on sait peu de chose sur la localisation des genes mutants sur les chromosomes.
La cytogénétique aviaire est un champ fertile pour de futures expérimentations; elle est l'objet de recherches en plusieurs endroits des Etats-Unis. Elle peut avoir des applications pratiques en sélection si elle permet d'obtenir une information mettant en relation des caractères économiques avec des chromosomes spécifiques.
