Factors Sometimes Overlooked and Underestimated in the Selection and Success of CAL as n Instructional Medium

Pages 67-79 | Published online: 11 Nov 2014

Abstract

Disappointments in the outcome of many computer-assisted learning applications are often caused by a misuse of the medium. Consequently many well meaning applications have been failures because they should not have been initiated in the first place or because insufficient attention was paid to related developmental, organizational, administrative, political, and operational consequences of using CAL. A number of procedures and factors are identified which can assist the CAL decision maker in the selection and implementation of a CAL application. Specific characteristics and attributes of the medium are discussed and a brief review of research is provided.
