A Critical Reconstruction of Jürgen Habermas' Holistic Approach to Rhetoric as Social Philosophy

&
Pages 128-137 | Published online: 23 Jan 2018

Abstract

This essay examines Habermas' ontological grounding of man's rhetorical nature and his phenomenological explication of the rhetorical process. Three problems plague his analysis: an inadequate guarantee that critical-dialectical processes will be invoked when needed, an insufficient analysis of methods for legitimating rationally grounded prejudice, and an incomplete rationale for the link between ideal and substantive certification procedures.
