The Concept of Evidence: A Critical Review

Pages 159-172 | Published online: 23 Jan 2018

Abstract

Empirical research on the use of evidence in argument has produced ambiguous and contradictory findings. In part, the confusion results from failure to provide precise conceptualizations and operationalizations for the evidence construct. Equally important is that investigations have shown a seeming disregard for proper methodological procedures. As a result, little knowledge can be gained from these studies.
