The History of Industrial Hygiene: A Review with Special Reference to Silicosis

Abstract

The historical development of industrial hygiene is presented with silicosis as the unifying theme. The development of protective, evaluative, and control measures is followed.

Silicon (L. silex, flint) … Next to oxygen, the most abundant element; characteristic of all abundant and important rocks except carbonates. It makes up about one-fourth of the crust of the earth. Silicon is not found free; it occurs chiefly as the oxide, silica (SiO2) (sand, quartz, rock crystal, amethyst, agate, flint, jasper, opal, etc.)1
