SUSAN BASSEIN has spent more than a decade wandering through the fields of optimal control theory, astronomy, music, electronics, dynamical systems, and randomness looking for ways to use mathematics to make sense of the world, both for herself and for her students. She is now performing statistical analyses for a project to reduce the use of fungicides on wine grapes in California.
