Abstract

A method for determining silver in silver sulfadiazine pharmaceutical creams and ointments has been developed. Organic residues in the products are destroyed with sulfuric acid and nitric acid mixture. After evaporation of acids the silver is reduced with formaldehyde in alkaline solution, pH 11 – 12.5, to the metallic state; which is then reoxidized at pH 3.5 with iron(III) in the presence of ferrozine. The resulting absorbance is measured at 562 nm. Average recoveries of 99.7 ± 0.19 % and 99.6 ± 0.12 % are obtained for the two pharmaceutical preparations tested, respectively.
