Following publication of this Essay Review, it has been brought to the attention of the author that he used ideas and text from the work by Dr Tilman Sauer detailed below without appropriate acknowledgement or referencing.

The author would like rectify this omission, and is adding the following reference to the Review:

Tilman Sauer, Einstein's Unified Theory Program, pre-print available at http://philsci-archive.pitt.edu/3293/1/uft.pdf. Available online 11th April 2007. To appear in The Cambridge Companion to Einstein, M. Janssen, C. Lehner (eds), Cambridge University Press, 2014.

Specifically the text in paragraph 2, p285, starting with ‘More serious for that programme … ‘and ending with ‘… other than protons and neutrons and their decays.’ should have appeared in quotation marks with a full reference to Dr Sauer's work.

The author offers his apologies to the editors and readers of Annals of Science, and especially to Dr Sauer.
