Introduction

Preface

This Special Issue is dedicated to Professor Sergio Vessella, and to the topics to which he devoted his research, on the occasion of his 65th birthday.

Sergio Vessella got his Laurea Degree, Cum Laude, at the University of Pisa in 1978, under the supervision of Professor Sergio Spagnolo. In 1979, he moved to the University of Florence with a CNR fellowship, doing research under the supervision of Professor Giorgio Talenti. From 1982 to 1988, he held a Ricercatore position at the Istituto di Analisi Globale e Applicazioni of the CNR, whose Director was Professor Carlo Pucci.

In this period, he mostly dedicated himself to linear ill-posed problems, establishing several fruitful collaborations and connections at international level. His work culminated with the writing of a book, jointly with Professor Rudolf Gorenflo, on Abel integral operators.

Nowadays the interest on fractional derivatives and operators is widespread and fashionable. Such an essay, conceived in the 1980s and published in 1991, was indeed ahead of its time.

In 1988, Sergio Vessella achieved an associate professorship and moved to the University of Salerno. He returned to Florence in 1991 and was promoted to full professor in 2001.

Starting in the 1990s, Sergio Vessella got interested in inverse boundary problems and to this purpose he specialized in quantitative estimates of unique continuation. Remarkable benchmarks in his achievements are, on one hand:

  • Carleman estimates, in particular for parabolic equations and for elliptic systems of elasticity; and, on the other:

  • global Lipschitz stability estimates for nonlinear inverse boundary problems.

His papers have opened new avenues in the development of Inverse Problems with effective consequences in applications. A striking feature in his work has been the careful attention to the constructive character of all estimates. With this style, he has established the most accurate standards of rigor in the quantitative study of Inverse Problems of the present time.

From the beginning of his career, till now, Sergio Vessella has developed numerous collaborations at the highest level. He has mentored and guided several younger scholars and has established, with many friends and colleagues, a stimulating common ground of research interests.

With this Special Issue, some of his friends, companions, former pupils and colleagues wish to contribute to his birthday's celebration.
