Abstract

The authors have isolated and identified in the urine of exposed workers the metabolites of carbon disulfide which are causing positive iodineazide reaction (IAR). By thin-layer chromatography (TLC), it was established that three metabolites are present in the urine giving positive IAR. It was postulated that 2-mercapto-2-thiazolinone-5 could be one of them. For comparison, this compound was accordingly synthesized. After concentration of the urine in a vacuum, chromatography of an aluminum oxide column, elution with a chloroformmethanol mixture, and TLC, 2-mercapto-2-thiazolinone-5 was isolated. Identification of the isolated compound was performed by TLC, gas chromatography, infrared spectrophotometry, elemental microanalysis, and mass spectrometry using the synthesized product as the reference substance.
