Differences Between Cigar and Pipe Smokers in Healthy White Veterans

Pages 187-191 | Received 04 Nov 1971, Accepted 24 Jan 1972, Published online: 02 May 2013

Abstract

To determine whether or not pure cigar smokers differ from pure pipe smokers in morphological and socioeconomic characteristics, the two groups were examined for anthropometric, somatotype, occupational, and educational descriptive features. The results indicate that the pure cigar smokers have larger mean bodily dimensions, greater laterality of body structure, and are more often endomorphic mesomorphs than ectomorphic mesomorphs. They have less formal education and have fewer representatives in managerial occupations. It appears, then, that pure cigar smokers and pure pipe smokers are quite different kinds of people, and that the practice of combining cigar and pipe smokers info a single category for study of association with other characteristics may well be unjustified.
