Abstract
A series of experiments, utilizing excised hamster tracheal rings, were undertaken to identify sources of variation in the ciliostasis test. The objective was to distinguish those variables that might be inherent in the biological system from those variables that might be attributable to laboratory or technical operations. The effect of differences in size of the tracheal rings were found to have little effect on time-to-ciliostasis. The ciliostat was found to be an important source of variability and therefore required careful control.
The necessity of imposing a statistical design on the observational sequences was demonstrated. In the interpretation of ciliostasis results variation can be detected, measured, and compensated for by balancing the animal-operator combinations with the treatments (samples) in a randomized complete block design.
