Technical Note

A simple device for calculating the probability of a house surviving a bushfire

Pages 119-123 | Received 10 Jun 1988, Published online: 15 Apr 2013

Summary

A circular slide-rule (House Survival Meter) has been developed to predict the approximate probability that a house will survive a severe forest fire when weather conditions correspond to a McArthur Forest Fire Danger Index of 100. The meter generates the same results as the equation on which it is based, but is simple and fast to use.
