Scanning Electron Microscopy of Incinerated Dental Tissues

ABSTRACT

Human dental tissues which had been subjected to the heat encountered in an automobile fire were examined with the scanning electron microscope. Enamel, dentin and cementum were all identifiable after incineration even though the macroscopic appearance of the tooth fragments suggested carbonization. On the basis of observations on the pulp-dentin complex, it is suggested that the effect of severe heat on teeth is to cause removal of organic or poorly mineralized organic tissues. The tissue remaining after incineration thus represents the skeleton of what would have been mineralized tissue during life.

RÉSUMÉ

Des tissus dentaires humains soumis à la chaleur dégagée lors d'un incendie de voiture ont été examinés au microscope électronique de balayage. L'émail, la dentine et le cément étaient encore identifiables, même si l'aspect macroscopique des fragments de la dent accusait une carbonisation. A la suite des observations faites sur le complexe puple-dentine, on estime que l'effet de la chaleur intense sur les dents est de faire disparaître les tissus organiques ou, du moins, les tissus organiques faiblement minéralisés. Les tissus qui demeurent après l'incinération représentent donc le squelette de ce qui était, durant la vie, des tissus minéralisés.
