Bloodstain Pattern Reconstruction—A Hammer Attack

ABSTRACT

In a New Zealand homicide, the victim was hit at least six times in the back of the head with a hammer-like implement. Bloodstain pattern reconstruction was carried out to investigate the amount of blood that could have spattered onto an assailant during such an attack. A blood-soaked plastic model head was hit with a hammer six times and the resultant spatter recorded. Very little spatter transferred to the clothing of the assailant in this reconstruction. These findings indicate that clothing of assailants in such attacks may not be visibly bloodstained. Direct contact with the bloodied victim or with deposited blood may be required for the transfer of large amounts of blood to clothing.

RÉSUMÉ

Lors d'un homicide en Nouvelle-Zélande, la victime fut frappée derrière la tête au minimum à six reprises à l'aide d'un objet similaire à un marteau. Afin d'évaluer la quantité de sang qui pourrait avoir éclaboussé un assaillant durant une telle attaque, on entreprit une analyse des patrons de projection du sang. On frappa à six reprises avec un marteau une tête modèle en plastique imbibée de sang et on examina les éclaboussures résultantes. Lors de cette reconstitution, très peu de sang fut transféré sur les vêtements de l'assaillant. Ces résultats nous indiquent que les vêtements des assaillants lors de telles attaques peuvent ne pas être visiblement tachés de sang. Un transfert d'une grande quantité de sang sur les vêtements n'aura lieu que s'il y a contact direct avec la victime ensanglantée ou avec du sang présent sur les lieux.
