Passive headspace extraction of ignitable liquids using activated carbon cloth

Pages 176-188 | Received 04 Aug 2015, Accepted 17 Dec 2015, Published online: 07 Jul 2016

ABSTRACT

An activated carbon cloth (ACC) and a commercially available activated carbon strip (ACS) were used to extract a variety of ignitable liquids using passive heated headspace extraction. Simultaneous extraction of ignitable liquids using both ACC and ACS were conducted overnight (16 hours) in one-litre paint cans at both room temperature and at an elevated temperature (60 °C). Heated extractions were also performed on a standard accelerant mixture of gasoline and diesel fuel in the presence of water vapour and the effect of water vapour on the extraction efficiency of ACC and ACS was evaluated.
