SUMMARY

Leaves of two varieties of Weigelia florida DC., the one with green leaves and the other with variegated leaves, showing green center and white-yellowish margin, have been studied by light and electron microscope. From light microscope observations, the variegated variety of Weigelia florida DC., seems to be a periclinal chimaera of green-white-green type. The epidermis of the variegated leaves appears to be both phenotypically and genotypically « green », whereas the epidermis of the green leaves does not contain developed plastids. In the variegated leaves, the plastids of cells, originated from L II layer, show great alterations.
