Abstract

Addition of diluents to the reactants may significantly change the behavior of a reactor system. In the present work, experimental trials have been conducted to study the effect of diluents, such as helium, nitrogen, and argon, on change in reactor temperature and pressure in a batch reactor carrying out H2-F2 reactions. The experiments were conducted at different initial pressures but the same H2 to F2 ratio. The thermal response of the reactor is found to be different at different pressure levels. A simple model has been used to explain the thermal behavior of the reactor. The results suggest that, besides fluid dynamics and heat transport behavior, the effect of diluents on kinetics of hydrogen and fluorine reaction cannot be ignored.
