Abstract

The concept of a combustion integral time scale is proposed. This time scale quantifies the rate of evolution of a non-stationary turbulent flame surface. It is shown to be an approximate evaluation of a generalised version of the integral time scale of flamelet crossings formulated by Bray and Libby (1986). and reflects the complex mechanism of flame-turbulence interactions. The technique for the evaluation is described. and first results. derived from cycle-resolved engine flames, are presented.
