Abstract

The geometry and burning intensity of two-dimensional and axisymmetric Bunsen flames are studied by adopting the local stretch, scalar field formulation. Equations governing the geometry of the flame front are derived for both the linear and nonlinear responses to flame stretch. Critical point analysis is employedto examine the flame behavior for various system parameters, such as the Lewis number, Arrhenius number and convective strength. Physical phenomena described include opening of the flame tip and the possible existence of inverted Bunsen flames. The predicted characteristics of the open tip Bunsen flame agree well with previous experimental observation. The use of the local Karlovitz number in assessing the nonlinear effect of stretch is proposed.
