Abstract

The mobility and fixation of phosphorus from urea phosphate (UP) (17–44–0) was studied over a 4‐week period in a Grabe loam calcareous soil. Four g of UP were applied at the surface or 15 cm below the surface of 10 x 50 cm columns containing 6.5 kg soil, and incubated at field capacity in a greenhouse. Available P (NaHCO3 extraction) decreased from 500 ppm after the first week to 200 ppm after the fourth week at point of application. P mobility was substantial to 20 cm below or below and above the point of applcation, and measured 75 ppm after the fourth week. Soil pH was lowered throughout the columns in a pattern following P distribution; the lowest pH drop, from 7.3 to 6.3, occured at the point of application and lasted for the first three weeks. Thus, P from UP stayed available for several weeks and moved considerably in a calcareous soil.
