Abstract
This article is intended to show the value, limitations, and major concerns in providing psychotherapy and counseling for college and university students. The challenges of the college years, the evolution of campus services, cultural changes affecting postsecondary education, and types of services are noted. Critical issues affecting college mental-health care are discussed, with an emphasis on ethics, effectiveness, and legal issues with suicidal and homicidal threats to life, mandatory treatment, and illicit and prescribed psychotropic drug use.

Leighton C. Whitaker
Leighton C. Whitaker, Ph.D., ABPP, is in private practice and an editor of Human Psychology and Psychiatry. From 1985 through 2010 he was editor of the Journal of College Student Psychotherapy. He was Director of Mental Health Services for the University of Massachusetts in the 1970s, Director of Psychological Services for Swarthmore College from 1980 to 1994. Previously, he was Associate Professor and Director of Adult Psychology programs for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
