Call for Paper

Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) in education research – methodological debates, questions, challenges

Special Focus to be published in Educational Research: 2018

Call for Papers: **submission deadline extended until 11th December 2017**

Guest editors: Dr Ben Styles and Professor Carole Torgerson

Theme

Before the advent of the Education Endowment Foundation in England in 2011, education research RCTs were largely confined to the US. As another country, Australia, embraces randomisation, this Special Focus will explore how the method is being received by the international research community. We invite a range of international perspectives, including papers from the US to provide background from a country with a long history of running trials, from England to gain the perspective of those getting to grips with the method and from other countries that remain either resistant or simply unable to adopt it.

This call for papers invites reports of original research, critical reviews of recent research and leading-edge discussion articles from colleagues working in the area. Articles must be accessible to the generalist reader and relevant to the journal’s international readership. Contributions from outside the UK are especially welcome. We are particularly interested in articles from a range of contexts and perspectives, both international and regional.

Contributions

Articles should address at least one of the following areas: the results of a recent RCT written up within the context of wider methodological debate; reasons for adoption or non-adoption of the method in a given setting or system, the history of RCTs in US education research; the adoption of RCTs in English education research over the last five years.

Paper submission

To make a submission, please follow the ScholarOne submission instructions on the journal’s Instructions for Authors page (http://www.tandfonline.com/action/authorSubmission?journalCode=rere20&page=instructions)

Submissions must be clearly labelled ‘ER RCTs in Education Research Special Focus 2018 submission’. Articles must begin with a structured abstract, include up to six keywords, and should not normally exceed 6,000 words. (For further guidance on structured abstracts, see the journal website at http://www.tandf.co.uk/Journals/Authors/rereabstracts.asp)

The Guest Editors for this Special Focus will be Dr Ben Styles (National Foundation for Educational Research, UK) and Professor Carole Torgerson (Durham University, UK).

Please submit papers by 11th December 2017 (extended deadline) at the latest.

Submissions will be subject to the Journal’s rigorous peer review process. All articles published in Educational Research undergo rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymised refereeing by at least two anonymous referees.
