The “National Seminar on Ferroelectrics and Dielectrics” (NSFD), a biennial seminar initiated by the Dielectrics and Ferroelectrics group in India in 1980, has successfully completed 41 years since its modest inception at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. The 22nd NSFD (NSFD-2022) took place in the Department of Physics, VIT-AP University, Andhra Pradesh, India. The class of materials known as dielectrics, often referred to as polar materials, which encompass piezo, pyro and ferroelectrics materials, play a key role in modern technology. They find applications in data storage, energy harvesters and wireless communications. This seminar focuses on the physics, chemistry and engineering aspects of ferroelectrics and dielectrics, covering a range of multidisciplinary topics, including both theoretical and experimental research.
The main objective of the seminar is to showcase ongoing research activities in the field of Ferroelectrics and Dielectrics, aiming to foster the development of advanced devices for memory, sensors, data storage, solar cells, and radar absorbing materials. The conference theme was divided into five areas: Fundamentals of Dielectrics, Ferroelectrics and Related Materials, Materials Design and Processing, Characterisation of Polar Materials, Applications of Ferroelectrics and Dielectrics, and Theoretical Modelling in Dielectrics. The ongoing research activities on Ferroelectrics and Dielectrics have been directed towards high k – Dielectric and High energy density materials in supercapacitor applications, relevant for stealth technologies in defence requirements.
The Seminar was praised by the attendees and facilitated the exchange of scientific ideas and new collaborations. Out of the manuscripts received, the referees have chosen 89 papers for publication in this special issue of Ferroelectrics. We express our gratitude towards the referees for their reviews and to all those who played a role in making NSFD-2022 a success, including the journal editors, Dr. Deborah J Taylor and Dr George W Taylor, as well as the Taylor and Francis Group for their efforts on this publication.
