Doping-induced ferroelectricity in liquid crystals

Pages 73-88 | Published online: 08 Feb 2011

Abstract

The method for obtaining ferroelectric liquid crystals by mixing two or more non—ferroelectric components is described. The origin of the spontaneous polarization in such mixtures is discussed. It is argued that the polarization comes from dipole moments of the chiral dopant molecules. The behaviour of the helix, induced in tilted smectic liquid crystals by chiral admixture and a simple model explaining this behaviour are described.
