The effects of boundary conditions and of surface properties on the characteristics of ferroelectric smectic C* thin layers are discussed. The complex temperature dependence of the pitch of helix in vicinity of the phase transition point is considered. The conditions of existence of bistable states in thin ferroelectric films are calculated.
