Abstract

We have investigated the apparent cone angle in SSFLC cells with five different polymers as alignment layers and the two ferroelectric mixtures ZLI-3654 and FELIX-010, as a function of the temperature. We find two qualitatively different behaviors. For polymers that do not give bistable cells we find the relationship δ = kθ where δ is the layer tilt angle and δ is the smectic C cone angle. k is a constant less than 1. For cells that show bistability we find the behaviour cosδ = K cosθ, (or equivalently cos(α/2) = 1/K) in this case K is a constant greater than unity.
