Antiferroelectricity in novel liquid crystalline materials

Pages 237-247 | Published online: 25 Feb 2011

Abstract

A group of six structurally similar compounds exhibiting antiferroelectric phases have been studied. The physical properties of these materials are described in detail. Measurements of the spontaneous polarisation, tilt angle and rotational viscosity as a function of temperature are given. These results are discussed with reference to the causes and stability of the antiferroelectric SC* phase. They are generally found to support conclusions reached by previous authors.
