Two homologous series: (S) 4-(1-methylheptyloxy-carbonyl)phenyl 4′-(3-alkanoyloxyprop-1-oxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylates and 4′-(3-perfluoro-alkanoyloxyprop-1-oxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylates were synthesized and their smectic phases and phase transitions were investigated using polarizing microscopy, DSC calorimetry and miscibility methods. Mixtures with a broad temperature range of the antiferroelectic smectic CA* phase and phase sequence CA*-A-I or CA*-C*-A-I were formulated.
