SUMMARY
The development of conversion coatings during the immersion of aluminium in a solution of 6.5g/l CrO3 + 3.875g/l NaF at 20°C was studied by scanning electron microscopy. X-ray microanalysis, weight change and potential-time techniques. Coatings were formed by precipitation of spherical particles, 2–4μm diameter, which merged and formed successive layers. Growth mechanisms and adhesion of the coatings are discussed and related to conversion coatings formed from widely used solutions.
