Keith Dennis

Dr Keith Dennis FIMF, elected IMF President 2001–2003, gave the Presidential Address in Birmingham on 3/12/01 following the ACM.

Dr Dennis graduated with a BSc honours degree in Metallurgy at Nottingham University in 1957. As the holder of the first Sir Ernest Canning Scholarship he remained at Nottingham to study for a PhD in the field of Metal Finishing (awarded 1960).

He worked for W. Canning Ltd for 6 years before joining the staff of the Metallurgy Department at Aston University in 1966.

In July 1993 he was awarded the degree of DSc by Aston University for his work on ‘Decorative and Functional coatings’.

For the last 9 years until his retirement from Aston he was the Director of the Combined Honours Degree Programme which is responsible for over 800 students. Keith Dennis has supervised over 20 successfiil PhD students and supervised a number of SERC/EPSRC and industrial research contracts. He has served on various Institute of Metal Finishing committees and at present is Chair of the Examination Board, member of the Publications Committee and member of the Midland Branch Committee.

Dr Dennis has over 80 publications on surface finishing topics to his name and the well known book ‘Nickel and Chromium Plating’ co-authored with the late T.E. Such (now in its third edition).
