Another year for the Journal comes to an end with this issue. It features another varied mix of topics. These include atmospheric plasma sprayed cermet coatings being modified by the plasma transferred arc method by L. Bayar and M. Ulutan. Another non-electrodeposition technique included is a study by M. Abid et al. of mechanical and tribological properties of organic epoxy/polyamide and inorganic silicate coatings deposited on mild steel by pneumatically spraying. Two electrodeposition studies featured are divided into deposition from deep eutectic solvents and aqueous electrolytes.

The former by A, Y. M. Al-Murshedi and colleagues discusses the vital role of water, long thought to be critically damaging, in the electrodeposition of copper on nickel from 1ChCl: 2EG-water mixtures.

The latter by M. B. Porto et al. describes the changes in properties of the increasingly reported cobalt-tungsten alloy coating by varying bath temperature, current density and cobalt concentration using factorial experiment design and ANOVA techniques. This paper also happens to be a perfect example of the use of statistical methods in design of experiments described by J. R. Smith and C. Larson in the 3rd and final part of their mini-series on the topic.

A useful practical article on the necessary steps to take in ensuring adherent electrodeposition on aluminium, based on a presentation at a recent IMF Southern Branch meeting held jointly with the Welding Institute, is provided by John Burgess, and Peter Leisner continues the valuable collaboration we have with EAST by describing the role of that body in supporting young surface finishing researchers throughout Europe, and discussing the Schwäbisch Gmünd Prize for Young Scientists 2019, won by Dr. Luis Fernando Arenas.

EAST Forum 2020 / 9th European Pulse Plating Seminar

EAST Forum 2020 is to be held as a part of the biennial 9th European Pulse Plating Seminar 2020, 5 – 6 March 2020 in Vienna, Austria. www.pulseplating-seminar.at

The latter event will be organised, as usual, by Dr Wolfgang Hansal and his colleagues at Hirtenberger Engineered Surfaces GmbH, Leobersdorferstrasse 31–33, 2552 Hirtenberg, Austria.

For further information on the 9th Pulse Plating Seminar please contact Dr. Wolfgang Hansal at [email protected]

For further information on EAST Forum 2020 please contact Dr. Manfred Baumgäsrtner, General Secretary, EAST at [email protected]
