Hypnotizability, Eating Behaviors, Attitudes, and Concerns: A Literature Survey

Abstract

The literature suggests that aspects of hypnotizability may be involved in the etiology and maintenance of self-defeating eating. However, interpretation of the published research findings has been complicated by the use of instruments that appear to have measured different or, at best, only related facets of the underlying constructs. This article reports relationships between weight, shape, dietary concerns, hypnotizability, dissociative capacity, and fantasy proneness. Implications for a key role for hypnosis in the treatment of eating behaviors, attitudes, and concerns are discussed.

Zusammenfassung

Die vorhandene Literatur legt den Schluss nahe, dass Aspekte von Hypnotisierbarkeit bei der Entstehung und Aufrechterhaltung selbstbezwingenden Essverhaltens eine Rolle spielen könnten. Allerdings wird die Interpretation der publizierten Forschungsergebnisse dadurch erschwert, dass Instrumente verwendet wurden, welche verschiedenartige oder bestenfalls ähnliche Facetten der zugrunde liegenden Konstrukte messen. In diesem Artikel werden Zusammenhänge zwischen Gewicht, Figur, Beschäftigung mit Diätmaßnahmen, Hypnotisierbarkeit, Dissoziationsvermögen und Phantasieneigung berichtet. Folgerungen bezüglich einer zentralen Rolle von Hypnose bei der Behandlung von Verhaltensweisen, Einstellungen sowie Sorgen bezüglich des Essens werden diskutiert.

Toutefois, l'interprétation des résultats de recherches publiés a été compliquée par l'utilisation d'instruments qui semblent avoir mesuré des facettes qui étaient différentes ou, au mieux, simplement proches des constructs sous-jacents. Le présent article porte sur les relations qui existent entre le poids, la silhouette, les troubles alimentaires, l'hypnotisabilité, la capacité dissociative et la tendance aux fantasmes. On y aborde le rôle clé que joue l'hypnose dans le traitement des comportements, attitudes et troubles de l'alimentation.

Sin embargo, la interpretación de los hallazgos de investigación publicados han sido complicados por el uso de instrumentos que aparentemente han medido facetas diferentes o, a lo más, conexas de los constructos subyacentes. Este artículo informa sobre relaciones entre el peso, la forma de cuerpo, los intereses dietéticos, la hipnotizabilidad, la capacidad disociativa, y la propensión a la fantasía.
