Role of Beliefs About Hypnotic States as a Moderator Variable: A Reexamination of the Relationship Between Reactance and Hypnotizability

Abstract

The hypothesis that beliefs about hypnosis determine the amount of psychological reactance aroused was tested. Participants were administered a measure of trait reactance to therapist directives (Therapeutic Reactance Scale; TRS), the Beliefs about Hypnotic State Questionnaire (BHSQ–R), and behavioral and subjective scales concerning hypnotic response. Hierarchical multiple regressions revealed significant interactions between BHSQ–R subscales and TRS. The findings suggest that the arousal of psychological reactance to hypnosis is determined by individuals’ trait reactance levels acting together with their interpretations of the hypnotic situation. The role of beliefs about hypnotic states as a moderator of the relationship between personality and hypnotizability was discussed.

Abstract

Es wurde die Hypothese getestet, inwieweit der Glauben an Hypnose das Ausmaß an hervorgerufener psychologischer Reaktanz bestimmt. Teilnehmer wurden einer Messung von Charakter-Reaktanz auf Anweisungen des Therapeuten (Therapeutic Reactance Scale, TRS), des Beliefs about Hypnotic State Questionnaire (BHSQ–R) und behavioralen und subjektiven Skalen bezüglich hypnotischer Antwort zugeführt. Hierarchische multiple Regressionen deckten signifikante Interaktionen zwischen BHSQ–R Subskalen und TRS auf. Die Ergebnisse lassen darauf schließen, daß das Auftreten psychologischer Reaktanz auf Hypnose durch die individuellen Merkmal-Reaktanz-Level bestimmt wird, die mit deren Interpretationen der hypnotischen Situation agieren. Die Rolle des Glaubens an hypnotische Zustände als Moderator der Beziehung zwischen Persönlichkeit und Hypnotisierbarkeit wurden diskutiert.

L’hypothèse selon laquelle les croyances au sujet de l’hypnose déterminent l’ampleur de la réactance psychologique suscitée a été mise à l’épreuve. Les participants ont fait l’objet d’une mesure de leur degré de réactance aux directives du thérapeute (échelle de réactance thérapeutique –TRS), le Questionnaire sur les croyances au sujet de l’état hypnotique (BHSQ–R) et des échelles comportementales et subjectives concernant la réaction hypnotique. Des régressions hiérarchiques multiples révèlent des interactions significatives entre les sous-échelles BHSQ–R et TRS. Les résultats semblent indiquer que l’attitude de réactance psychologique à l’hypnose est déterminée par le niveau de résistance à l’hypnose de l’individu, de concert avec son interprétation de la situation hypnotique. Le rôle des états hypnotiques et des croyances à leur sujet en tant que modérateurs de la relation entre la personnalité et l’hypnotisabilité a été abordé.

Se evaluó la hipótesis de que las creencias sobre hipnosis determinan el grado de reactancia psicológica. Se administró a los participantes una prueba de reactancia rasgo a las directivas terapéuticas (Escala de Reactancia Terapéutica; TRS por sus siglas en Inglés), el Cuestionario de Creencias sobre el Estado Hipnótico (BHSQ–R), y escalas conductuales y subjetivas sobre respuesta hipnótica. Una regresión múltiple jerárquica reveló interacciones significativas entre las subescalas del BHSQ–R y la TRS. Los hallazgos sugieren que el grado elicitado de reactancia psicológica hacia la hipnosis está determinado por los niveles de reactancia rasgo del individuo, en conjunto con sus interpretaciones de la situación hipnótica. Se discute el rol de las creencias sobre los estados hipnóticos como moderadoras de la relación entre personalidad e hipnotizabilidad.
