The Elkins Hypnotizability Scale: Assessment of Reliability and Validity

Abstract

Measuring hypnotizability is an integral part of hypnosis research and is also relevant for predicting effectiveness of hypnosis-based therapies. The Elkins Hypnotizability Scale (EHS) was designed to meet the needs of modern hypnosis research and clinical practice. Reliability, validity, and normative data were explored by subjecting 230 participants to the EHS and Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale: Form C (SHSS:C). The EHS demonstrated adequate internal consistency (α = .78), its items showed good discriminating ability, and scores of the two scales were highly correlated (ρ = .86). Results indicate that the EHS is a reliable and valid tool to assess hypnotizability. Further research is needed to establish its role as a surrogate for the SHSS:C.

Die Messung der Hypnotisierbarkeit ist ein wesentlicher Teil der Forschung zu Hypnose und auch für die Vorhersage der Effektivität Hypnose-basierter Therapien relevant. Die Elkins Hypnotisierbarkeitsskala (EHS) wurde designed, um die Bedürfnisse moderner Hypnoseforschung und klinischer Praxis zu decken. Reliabilität, Validität und normative Daten wurden etabliert, indem 230 Teilnehmer der EHS und der Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale: Form C (SHSS:C) zugeteilt wurden. Die EHS zeigte adäquate innere Konsistenz (alpha = 0.78). Ihre Merkmale zeigten eine gute diskriminierende Fähigkeit und Ergebnisse der beiden Skalen korrelierten sehr hoch (rho = 0.86). Die Ergenisse weisen darauf hin, daß die EHS ein zuverlässiges und valides Werkzeug ist, um Hypnotisierbarkeit einzuschätzen. Es werden weitere Forschungen benötigt, um seine Rolle als Ersatz für die SHSS:C nachzuweisen.

La mesure du degré d’hypnotisabilité fait partie intégrante de la recherche sur l’hypnose et est également pertinente dans la prédiction de l’efficacité des thérapies fondées sur l’hypnose. L’échelle d’hypnotisabilité d’Elkins (EHS) a été conçue pour répondre aux besoins de la recherche et de la pratique clinique modernes liées à l’hypnose. On a soumis 230 participants à l’échelle EHS et à l’échelle de susceptibilité hypnotique de Stanford: formulaire C (SHSS:C), afin d’examiner la fiabilité, la validité et les données normatives de celles-ci. L’EHS a démontré une cohérence interne adéquate (α = 0,78), ses items ont indiqué une bonne capacité discriminante, et la corrélation entre les scores des deux échelles était forte (rho = 0,86). Les résultats indiquent que l’EHS est un outil fiable et valide d’évaluation de l’hypnotisabilité. D’autres recherches seront nécessaires pour établir son rôle comme substitut à l’échelle SHSS:C.

La medición de la hipnotizabilidad es una parte integral de la investigación en hipnosis y también es relevante para predecir la eficacia de terapias basadas en hipnosis. La Escala Elkins de Hipnotizabilidad (EHS por sus siglas en Inglés) fue diseñada para satisfacer las necesidades de la investigación moderna sobre hipnosis y la práctica clínica. Se exploraron la fiabilidad, validez, y datos normativos al administrarle a 230 participantes la EHS y la Escala Stanford de Susceptibilidad Hipnótica, Forma C (ESSH:C). La EHS mostró una consistencia interna adecuada (α = .78), sus reactivos presentan buena habilidad para discriminar, y las puntuaciones de ambas escalas estuvieron altamente correlacionadas (rho = .86). Los resultados indican que la EHS es un herramienta fiable y válida para evaluar hipnotizabilidad. Se requiere más investigación para establecer su rol como sustituta de la ESSH:C.

¹ The final hypnotizability score is the same with both scoring methods; however, it is psychometrically more sound to use the new six-item scoring system for the item-based analyses.

² For example, a participant with a score of 7 on the EHS and a score of 8 on the SHSS:C would be considered medium according to one’s EHS score and high hypnotizable according to one’s SHSS:C score.

³ Heteroactive hypersuggestibility, originally proposed by Hull (1933) and partially confirmed by Hilgard (1965), refers to the trans-enhancing effect of passing a hypnotic suggestion, which increases the tendency to pass the next suggestion.

⁴ When interpreting this result, we have to take into consideration that we used the hypnotizability categorization published in the SHSS:C booklet (Weitzenhoffer & Hilgard, 1962) recognizing four hypnotizability subgroups, which statistically leaves more room for deviation between the two scales than using a three-subgroup system usually applied in current hypnosis research.
